  1. Once upon a time there lived a little distance away from Loughleagh lake a little man called John, and his old mother.
    They lived by hook and by crook one way and another in the best way they could. They had a little bit of ground which gave them plenty, and a little red cow that gave them a drop of milk.
    John was a very useful little man.
    Every day he used to milk the red cow and cut heath on the mountain.
    One day he went up to the mountain, and the cow followed him.
    When he had a good bundle cut he lay down on the grass and he went asleep.
    He had not long to sleep, for when he woke the fairies were dancing round him.
