I live in townland of Lissacaha North. It is marked on the Ordnance Survey 6 inch map, Cork Sheet 139. It is five miles from the village of Schull. It is in the parish of Kilmoe. The Church of Ireland divided the Parish of Kilmoe into two parts.
They called the east part of it Altar Parish. It is in Altar Parish the townland of Lissacaha is. This division was made about the time of the famine. It is in the Barony of the West division of West Carbery. Lissacaha means "the fort of the battle".
There are 350 1/4 acres in the townland of Lissacaha North. The people around here nearly always call it the Prairie. It was Captain Somerville gave it that name. He lived for some years in the prairies of North America. He called his house "The Prairie Cottage"
