- Under the Penal Laws the Catholics were not allowed to have any education at home or abroad. But in spite of the laws education went on. There were 'poor scholars' as they were called who spent their time going from district to district teaching the children spending about a fortnight in each district. Very often the master assembled his pupils, who sometimes came many miles, under a hedge and so they got the name of hedge-schools. Those masters taught the classics and languages as well as the ordinary school(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
