“About 6 miles north-east of the town of Macroom near the village of Ballinamorris in the parish of Aghina are the remains of an unfinished church which was partly built in the year 1836.”
About 6 miles north-east of the town of Macroom near the village of Ballinamorriv in the parish of Aghina are the remains of an unfinished church which was partly built in the year 1836.
It appears that the Rev Father Greene, the then parish Priest, decided to build a church in the centre of the parish. This displeased the local Protestant landlord, who, for a wonder, was in residence in the parish, and he vetoed the project as far as that particular site was concerned. A Mr. Coppinger, a local R.C. landowner stepped in and gave a site, which however was not as central as the first one.
Building started on the church, but on a certain Sunday, R.C. supporters of the Protestant landowner, evidently inspired, attempted to destroy the newly commenced walls. A strong resistance was encountered, and they were eventually beaten off.
