  1. Tanyards.
    There were three originally in Macroom. One disappeared a long time ago, and the others are non-existent for 30 years. They were in Massytown, a part of the town of Macroom, and were owned by the late Richard Neville and then afterwards his son, John Neville.
    The skins were obtained from farmers in the district, from butchers of the locality and from dealers in the city of Cork.
    Over 30 men were constantly employed, viz yardmen,
    tanners
    curriers, and
    finishers.
    The "yardmen" lifted the leather (skin) out of the holes of water in which they were steeped.
    The "tanners" were occupied in scraping the hair from the hides and preparing the hides for the tan-holes.
    The "curriers" shaved the hides, and graded the thickness according to the class or quality of leather required.
    The finishers prepared the leather for the shop after the material had been taken out of the
