  1. St Gobnait patron saint of Ballyvourney, in particular, and generally of South Munster belonged to the period immediately succeeding St Patrick and was born in the early part of the sixth century. Her origin has long been a matter of controversy, various and conflicting accounts as to her extraction and place of birth having been given from time to time by historians and others, many of whose opinions were based on theory.
Some of these commentaries paint to Muskerry as being the birth place of Gobnait, while it was stated that her father was the chieftain of the district. Others give Leinster as her place of birth and say she was daughter of a high king. It is noticeable that while historians differ as to her place of birth, all are agreed that she was of noble extraction, descended from either a king or a provincial chieftain.
