- All the houses long ago had thatched roofs of rushes and sedge and later on of straw.
The old houses had a bed in the kitchen. It was placed along a side - wall. It was called a settle - bed. In the daytime it was folded up, and used as a seal.
The fireplace was often placed inside the door. The people used wood and turf for fire. The chimney were made of wattlers plastered with yellow clay.
A great number of people had no glass for their windows. They used horn scraped thin to let in the light. The old floors were made of yellow clay and rushes.
Half - doors were very common long ago, and they are used in a great many cottages now - a - days.
