Potatoes are grown in our farm. About two acres of land is sown under potatoes every year.
The ground is not manured before it is turned up, but it is first ploughed, then cultivated and before the seed is sown the land is manured. They are sown in drills and ridges. Drills are made when the land is brought to a fine tilt, with two scrubs of the plough, one lapped against the other, and about 27 inches between each two drills for a furrow. Ridges are made at the first ploughing, putting six scribes into each ridge and lapping one against the other, and about 18 inches between each two ridges for a furrow. A plough that is used nowadays. Wooden ploughs were the first ploughs to be used to plough the land, but iron has taken its place as they were easily broken(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
