1. Food in Olden Times

   In former times the food of the people was scarce, and of very poor quality, especially so in the case of the peasant farmers and labouring people. They scarcely ever knew the taste of flesh meat except perhaps a little at Christmas or Easter. The chief diet consisted of potatoes, a little fish, and skimmed milk. The usual number of meals in the day was three, breakfast at nine, consisting of milk and potatoes dinner at two, consisting of potatoes and fish, and supper of Indian-meal stirabout at eight. They used work before breakfast each morning, out in the fields. They sometimes had oneway bread or oaten bread baked in a bastible or on a griddle. Tea was not much
