  1. In nearly all the districts in Ireland great men have sprung up. There was one man whose name was Michael Hayes of Rosscarbery who was a wonderful seaman and he won many prizes in the pig-and-pole. There was another man named Tim O'Mahony of Rosscarbery who was very good for running. There was another man whose name was Dan McCarthy of Inchigeela who killed seven hares in the run one snowy morning without shoes or stockings on him. This happened about one hundred and thirty years ago. Shoes and stocking were as plentiful then as they now are.
