- During the penal days in Ireland the Irish people were allowed to have no schools, and they had to hold a class in lonely in hills
If any English soldier found the teacher they would put him to death. The English wanted the Irish to be, poor and ignorant. These schools got the name "Hedge school" because it was by the hedges they used to teach. These schools-masters would not stay long in each place, but remove from place so that they would not be caught.
During the summer and Autumn school was held in the open air.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
