When the English were doing their best to destroy the Irish language and to teach the English language to the people, a man came or was sent into to Cape Clear Island to teach English. He was not succeeding very well and used beat the children because they found it difficult to learn. The people of the island resented his attitude. They are noted for being a big race and one day some of the biggest men among them took this English teacher out in a boat and threatened to drown him if he would not leave the island.
He left immediately and at that time the attempt to Anglicise the island failed.
