They made up a plan that if they could get a good marksman to shoot the hangman, then they would rush in and free the priest. It happened that one man came forward he was more or less intoxicated, but he was a crack shot.
He took the gun and fired and killed the hang-man. The enemy got confused and frightened and so they ran. Then the Catholics ran in and freed the priest.
