“Marriages in our townland take place during Shrove, and the month thought unlucky for Marriage is May.”
Marriages in our townland take place during Shrove, and the month thought unlucky for marriages is May. Before marriages take place there has to be understanding between the parties which is known as matchmaking. The girl, who is going to get married gets money, and sometimes cattle, from her father, and a wedding feast is held in the bride's house the night of the marriage. It is the custom for "straw-boys" to visit the house where the wedding is held, they dress up in straw and put veils on their faces. They are all let into the house and they dance and sometimes they are given drink.- Bailitheoir
