  1. My Mother's Means.
    Twas on a Thursday morning,
Very early I got orders to prepare,
Some good flounders for the market
Which my mother had to spare.
I packed them up and tied them,
    With little knots of straw
And two neater bags of seed potatoes,
    I'm sure you never saw.
    II
    The jennet I got ready
And I packed my little load
    You'd imagine she was dancing
With the way she tipped the road.
She passed out both mules and asses
    And soon arrived in town
And I took my station in the shambles
Where I laid my burden down.
    III
It so happened that my guardian,
    Was so busy on that day;
That she said for once she'd trust me,
    And let me peg away.
    But I promised e'er I started,
    That no company I'd join,
Or be drunk or in the barrack,
Or be foolish with the coin.
