   district soon after the famine outbreak and the food the people lived on instead of potatoes was indian meal. The Government supplied them with the meal. There are plenty of stories about the famine times. It was said that a great number of people who had who had their houses on Slieve Bawn mountain left them and died amoung the bushes. There is also a story told of a man that lived in this district. He went to the market looking for meal and when he could not get any he went out and lay on the side of the road where he was got dead and a mouthful of grass in his mouth. He was so reduced to hunger that he started eating the grass but died in doing so.
