- In the townland of Tully near to the Tully School to the west of the main road as you travel from Castlerea to Belanagare, in a field occupied by James Hara, stands a very ancient hawthorne tree under which tradition states is a large crock of gold covered by a flag. It was placed there by the Danes during their hasty retreat from Ireland. It is said that they had a woman prisoner to whom they promised freedom if she agreed to mind it until their return, she did so, they immediately beheaded her, and she has to keep her promise and guard the treasure.
It is said that if three men of the same name dream of it, the spell is broken and they can remove it safely. There was an attempt made to unearth it one time by three men, one of whom did not dream but pretended he did in order to get the treasure.
