- Gorthaganny as the name implies - 'Gort a' Ghainnimh, means sandy fields. The old school in Gorthaganny was built under the National Education Act in 1869, and was in existence till 1911 when it was replaced by the present one. The first inspection as recorded in the observation Book was held in 1870 by Mr. J McCallinn, the teachers being Mr Edward McDermott and Miss Mary Higgins. Mr McDermott afterwards taught in Meelick School in Loughglynn parish.
The school district consists of the following villages: i.e.
(1) Gorthaganny,(2) Lecarrow (leath-Cheathramha),
3. Erritt which consists of Upper and Lower Erritt, (Earaid),
4. Dromod (Druim-fhada)=(long hills forming a watershed).,
5. Carrowbehy = Ceathreamha na Beithe = Quarter land of the birch trees.
6. Derrylahon, = Doire leathán = broad oak trees.
7. Cloonagh = Clún Each
8. Tully = Tullach
9. Errisaune = Iorrasán
At the extreme end of Erritt is Cloonrow bridge which divides Roscommon and Mayo- Erritt being in the parish of Loughglynn, Co Roscommon, and Cloonrow in the parish of Kilmovee, Co Mayo. At this bridge is 'Cumar na dTrí n-Easbog' or Meeting of the "Three Bishops", for the three parishes of Aughamore, (Tuam diocese) Kilmovee (Achonry diocese) and Loughglynn (Elphin diocese) meet here.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
