  1. There was in Ireland some years ago a Society known as "The Molly McGuires." The members of this society were very bitter in their hatred of the English Landlords and their agents in Ireland. So bitter were they that they were determined to shoot them down even at the risk of their own lives.
    On May 21st 1858 an agent named Irvin, living in Camlin near Ballinameen, was returning from the Fair of Frenchpark. When he reached Carrabane, a district about an English mile from Frenchpark he was fired on by a number of men of the above society who were lined up inside the wall of Lord De Freyne's Demesne. On hearing the shots he immediately turned his horse and headed for Frenchpark Police. The ambushers fled in all directions and the police followed in hot pursuit. A man named John Hogg and a companion of his tried to make their way through the valleys and bogs to Mantua but they were followed by some of the police and fired on as they were crossing
