- St Johns Day. The Bonfire Night which falls on the 23rd June is the night before St Johns Day.
On the Bonfire Night it is the custom in this part of the country that when the Bonfire is quenched to bring some of the ashes into the house, because it is supposed to bring good luck upon the house. Another belief about it is that you will have turf in plenty the year after.Good Friday. If a person draws blood from an animal on Good Friday by a beating or by cruelty he is supposed to die before the year is out. Good Friday is supposed to be a lucky day on which to set potatoes. The man who sets potatoes on that day will have a good crop. Holy Thursday. It is a custom for women to wear their hair down over their shoulders in honour and commemoration of Mary Magdalen when she dried our Lords feet with her hair.
