  1. In the time of the famine a man lived with his mother about a mile from Boyle. One day his mother died from starvation. He put her in a creel and carried her through Boyle on his back. He hoped the police would take him up, and send him to prison, because he knew he would be sure of a bit to eat there. The jails were full, and he was made bring his mother to the grave yard and bury her. He himself lingered for a few days more on boiled nettles, and then he also died.
