    The Danes or Northmen. The people believe that the Danes plundered the old church at Kilmacarril. This is probably true as there is a tunnel leading from the ruins to a field in Loughill. There is also a font in this field. Not far from this district is a place called "Danesfort" and it is likely that there were many Danish settlements on the river banks.
