- Long ago the people who lived in the country seldom sent for a doctor. There were very few doctors then and the few that were living here were in the cities and towns. Because of this the people had cures of there own.
Those who had these cures were called quacks. As these cures were found in the fields and woods they were usually very healthy.
There were cures too that were handed down by word of mouth. The quacks usually cured skin disease. They were not able to cure internal ailments.
