St Canice of Aghaboe was born at Derry in the year 525 a.d.

    (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)
now marks the monastery which St. Canice built there.
His monastery at Aghaboe became very successful and after some time became a prosperous town. A very large number of people lived in Aghaboe.
After some years St. Canice died and the people of Leix and the people of Kilkenny wished to claim the coffin. On the day of the funeral a battle was to be fought between the two parties. As they were carrying the coffin a voice told them to turn away their heads and when they looked again there were two coffins. The people of Leix took one and the people of Kilkenny took the other.
It is not known where St. Canice is buried.
