- Churning in olden Times.
My father told me that when he was young they used to churn with a wooden mashine erected in a wooden house worked by a blindfolded horse. The dairy adjoined + a crank through a wall used to work the churn.
In them days they used to save all the butter in firkens that used to hold about four stone.
It used to be generally sold twice a year in May + December.
It was the principal industry in the mountainous districts over Tinahoe.
That industry failed more or less and the people in those districts were never able to live as comfortably since.
By selling the butter weekly the money never accumulates. - Storm.
One the night of the 26th Feb 1903 we had a dreadful storm all over Ireland.
Houses were blown down tires were blown down, and up rooted, hay + straw were blown all over the country, telephone + telegram wires all broken + put out of action.
