- I gathered long green rushes and left them to dry in the corner near the fire. Then I collected old candle-grease and pieces of used candles and melted them on the lid of a tin sweet box. Then I got a rush and dipped it into the melted candle-grease and left it aside untill the grease had dried into it. I did this with twelve rushes and afterwards they were used as lights in the house.

- A number of rushes are gathered and left and left until dry. Sallies are gathered, dried and peeled. Sometimes they are smoked to give a brown colour. Some thick sallies are split to form the foundation of the basket. The rushes are plaited, some horizontally others vertically around the sallies. This is continued until the basket is completed.
