    SHROVE TUESDAY
    Pancakes are eaten on this day and children are sent from house to house to ask for the "pancake silal ?".
    MAY EVE
    May flowers are gathered and strewn before the doors of dwelling houses and outside out-offices as protection from the fairies.
    Sprigs of rowan trees are placed there also for the same reason.
    HALLOW EVE
    Barm brack, apple cakes, nuts eaten.
    Young boys go out and remove anything portable (gates etc.) from their owner's premises and leave them as far away as possible.
    NEW YEAR'S DAY
    Nothing is thrown out (ashes, water). Nothing given away (butter, milk).
    The first Monday of the New Year is Hanal Monday.
    WHIT SUNDAY
    It is supposed to be unlucky to go near water (to fish or bathe) on Whit Sunday.
    Whit week is generally counted unlucky.
