1. The Potato Crop

   The potato crop is a very common crop in this district. Every farmer grows potatoes. The amount of potatoes sown is about an acre on a ten acre farm Sometimes there is more potatoes sown and sometimes less. Sometimes the manure is ploughed down and more times is spread in the drills.
   At present all potatoes are set in drills but about sixty years ago drills were unheard of. All the potatoes were set in ridges. There were two ways of planting the potatoes in ridges In one the face of the spade was used and in the other the back was used.
   The process by the former method was to spread the manure on the ground, drop the seed potatoes in rows across the ridge and two people with spades formed up the ridge and covered up the seed. The other method where the back of the spade was used was as follows. In this case the seed potato was stuck into the ground two inches under the surface. The spade would be stuck into the
