- Tom McMahon lived at Bri, Castleblayney but he had a big farm of 200 acres which he bought off Andrew McMatt. This farm of two hundred acres was mostly in Taplagh where the Reverend Mr. Hogg, Episcopalian Minister then lived in the Glebe. In 1885 the Reverend Mr. Hogg was evicted and left Glebe house. It is said that the agent on the Bath Estate and the Church Governing Body in Taplagh, wanted to get rid of Mr. Hogg as he had a rather unsavory reputation in the district.
It appears that Canon Hoey of Broomfield had a field of hay bought off Mr. Hogg after the latter left the district and before hay way cut. Big Tom McMahon - the grandfather of the present owner of this farm stepped in on the bargain and the Local Land League Branch - then a very strong and virile one - immediately took steps to boycott McMahon.
