  1. On the first day of August I'll never forget,
Mick Brennan and Balkan in Clashduff I met,
They were running like red-shanks, and tearing their hair
Says Balkan, We're chased by a mighty big bear.
I was off to the Barracks sure Balkan did run,
And called on the Sergeant to bring out his gun,
"My life is in danger" he solemnly did swear,
"For its on the Clashduff road and there's a mighty big bear"
The "Peelers" got ready brought powder enough,
To shoot the big bear that was up in Clashduff,
Out came "the Bottler" on the road he did prance,
Says he to the Sergeant "We'll call out Jim Bance."
We'll call out John Kelly, Fred Holmes, and Jack Craugh, Tom Ring, and Tom Kavanagh and the pig man, called "Cha"
We're all jolly fellows the devil may care,
We'll die or we'll capture that mighty big bear.
They scampered along till they met with "Black Jeff"
