- John was called the Gom not because he was a fool but because he acted one when there was something to be made out of it. John arrived first in Johnswell driving a baker's bread car from Coolcullen. He delivered the bread in a public house which had a licence to sell beer but not to consumed on the premises. John, when his mission was over, purchased half a gallon of beer and brought it in to Biddy Lannigan's cabin to drink at his ease. He found Biddy would take a cup too so he was generous. Soon they were both jolly and John asked her if she had any children. On her telling him she had one grown up daughter at home, who was that day picking potatoes for a farmer, John asked if she(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
