Birds and Bird Lore
The Cuckoo
The cuckoo comes in April,
She sings her song in May,
In the middle of June she loses her tune, In July she flies away. The cuckoo is a small bird,
She sings as she flies,
She brings us true tidings,
And tells us no lies.If you kill a cuckoo you will never see one again and if you scare a cuckoo out of a field she will never return to that field again.
When you first hear the cuckoo count the number of calls she gives. Some say you will be dead in that number of years (a year for each call) while others say you will be married in that number of years.
The first time you hear the cuckoo in any year look under your left foot. There is a rib of hair there. If you can find it its colour will be the colour of your future wife's (or(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
