- Shops were very scarce in times gone by, and the general time for buying was after Mass, when people bought tea, sugar, bread, butter, matches, candles & soap.
Money was not always used as goods were often bartered.
The four penny piece & crown are gone out of date.
- There were many little shops called hucksters' shops on the roads in this district long ago. Money was given sometimes for goods but often, a fat pig or hay or oats.
The people in the shops sold matches, & homemade-candles made out of the fat of sheep with a rush for a wick. - Bailitheoir
