  1. Shops were very scarce in times gone by, and the general time for buying was after Mass, when people bought tea, sugar, bread, butter, matches, candles & soap.
    Money was not always used as goods were often bartered.
    The four penny piece & crown are gone out of date.

  2. There were many little shops called hucksters' shops on the roads in this district long ago. Money was given sometimes for goods but often, a fat pig or hay or oats.
    The people in the shops sold matches, & homemade-candles made out of the fat of sheep with a rush for a wick.
