  1. On a warm Summer's day a poor scholar was travelling the road from Callan to New Market he passed a public house on his journey and on the sign board was written
Weary traveller as you pass by
    Come in and and try.
    The flavour of my honey.
    He wrote under this.
    "Sad and weary,
    I must pass by.
For I can not try the flavour of your honey
    For if I went in.
    The bees would sting
For I have got no money.
He continued on his journey until he he came to the lodge gates of a very big gentleman's house. He was about to enter when he noticed the following lines
    Turk, Jew or Atheist
May enter here but not a Papist
    Underneath he wrote,
The man who wrote it wrote it well,
For the same was written on the gates of hell.
After the famine there was a wealthy gentleman
