  1. Cromwell landed in Waterford in the year 1649. He passed up through Mullinavat. He destroyed the Church in Deepark, the Church in Rossinan and the Church in Killahy. He went through Ballyhale and Knocktopher until he came to Jerpoint abbey. He thought it a pity to destroy it, so he passed it by. When he had gone about a quarter of a mile the friars rang the joy bells.
    Cromwell came back with his army and destroyed the abbey and killed all the friars except 3 which escaped through some of the windows. They were followed by the soldiers who having caught them on the side of a hill stabbed them to death. The place is called the three friars since. There are three stone pillars showing the spot where the friars were killed.
