- In olden times oaten bread was used in this district. The oaten meal was steeped in a bowl for three days. They dry oaten meal was mixed with that and when it was kneaded a pinch of flour was shaken over it and it was baked on a griddle. Black pea meal bread was also used. The home grown peas were ground and mixed with mashed potatoes. Every member of the family used to put his or her initials on the cake with a knife and who ever had his or her name on the part of the cake that would rise highest would get the biggest part of the cake
