  1. The famine years were in 1846 and 1847. It was on potatoes that the people mostly depended up till then and when the potato crop failed thousands of them died of starvation.
    Some people call it "the year of the black potatoes" because all the potatoes turned black when they were put into pits. Then the people had to import seed potatoes from foreign countries to have for the next year.
