  1. A great snow-storm occurred in this district in the year 1917. The weather was very cold and frosty in the end of December 1916 and it snowed heavily. It started snowing on the 28th of January and finished on the 30th. The snow was twelve feet deep in some places and it did a lot of damage. A lot of sheep were killed, and houses were knocked also, with the wind. A great number of trees fell and lives were lost. On the first night of the snow-storm a girl was coming down from Laucus to Stoneyford and she was blown down the hill with the heavy wind and was badly injured. Where it could be afforded snow-ploughs were brought out to clear the roads. The snow remained on the ground until April.
