To get to Ballyhale for Sunday Mass he had to walk from Ballycallan. He did the first of the journey on Friday & stayed that night at a friend's house about half-way and safely covered the remainder of the journey on Saturday.

All the roads were blocked and in the village of Rosboultra all the groceries were used up for it was near the end of the week when the snow started & nobody had much of a stock in.
