    On the night of the storm a pedlar who was known locally as Tol-lol had settled himself in a shelter on the Kiltorcan road. Tol-lol had been a soldier and had served in the Boer War which occurred just as his term of service was completed. He always wore a broad-brimmed hat which he said had been given to him by a dying Boer after the Battle of Pretoria. This hat was his most treasured possession. He was returning from Ballyhale that night with some provisions when a gust of wind took the hat off. Tol-Lol thought the storm could do nothing worse to him and in the morning he
