  1. One cold frosty night in December
I believe it was Christmas time
We all sat round the fire in a circle
And each one did give out his rhyme,
When a feeble tap came to my door
And hastening to open it I ran,
And there to my surprise stood before me
A poor and decrepid old man.

He asked me for a night's shelter
And said for my friends' souls he'd pray.
My heart it was then moved with pity
And I cheerfully told him to stay.
I then brought him in my dwelling,
I placed the old man by the fire,
His age it demanded some honour
And I gave it all it required.

His hair it was greyer than silver,
His garb was all ragged and torn,
And by the sighs he kept constantly heaving
    I knew he was sad and forlorn;
He told me some ninety-eight stories,
The most of which I've foregot,
