    Parnell brought the seed of the champions: they thought it well to change the seed they had because they were failing so often through blight. The potato blight was the cause of the Great Famine in 1847, and there was often a famine before and after '47 because of the blight. They (the champions) throve well in the country, and were kept for years; but people know now that seed potatoes should be changed from time to time.
    There was a song about Parnell after his death, and one verse was:
    "In time of need he brought champion seed,
    "And oats too, we could see,
    When distress was great he sold his estate
    For to serve his country.
    And to release it back again
    To America he sailed o'er;
    But now alas! it has come to pass
    That brave Parnell is no-more."
