Cribs were also made of elder branches to catch the birds in winter & also to trap the young of thrushes finches etc. The cribs put over the nest were put on in such a way that the parent birds could still feed the young ones. The crib was to prevent the young ones from flying.
A crib to catch birds in winter was made something like this. "Four sticks were put together in the shape of an oblong or square Above those four more & so on each four joined on to the four below but getting narrow towards the top. A trap wa made at the narrow opening & when the bird went in to get the food which was placed inside the trap closed and the bird couldn't get out.
