- There are potatoes grown on our farm. We sow about an acre of potatoes every year.
My father prepares the ground for them. Before he ploughs the ground he puts farmyard manure on it. We sow the potatoes in drills. First of all the farmer ploughs the ground with an iron plough. Then he harrows the land until the lumps are broken up. When the clay is broken up well, he gets his plough and opens the drills about twenty four inches apart. The potatoes are cut with an knife leaving a sprout on each potato.
Some neighbours help each other. When they are over ground they are fagged and clay put up to them. They are left that way until they are fit to dig. My father ploughs them(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
