  1. Hurling was played in this district in olden times but not in the same way as it is in the present time. Matches were played in big square fields; two opposite ditches served as goal-posts. Points were not counted. Seventeen men played on each team and usually large crowds witnessed each match.
    One Sunday many years ago one of these matches was played in a field in the townsland of Ballybrazil and the captain of the other team was John Walsh of Dournane. Ballybrazil won the match by one goal.
