- This mudwalled thatched house is on the Milltown Kildare road at Rathbride. The owner is Pat Reddy. It was built by his father about 50 years ago to replace an older house.A huge pile of clay was drawn to the site. With this was mixed “keeve” (ciabh ? = a kind of rushes) for binding. The clay or mud was put into position with a grape and hardened by beating with the same instrument. The walls were made very thick and were at intervals trimmed inside and outside to the same level with a sharp instrument. With the accumulated limewash the walls are now 20 or 22 inches thick.The roof timber was obtained locally. It was covered with scraws and thatched.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
