Long ago the old women used to knit shawls and out fringes on them and tie the fringes with coloured threads. They used to have a kind of a competition seeing who would have the nicest shawl. They used to (oats) make short coats for the men out of calico, and dye them with logwood and copperous. These short coats were called "dresses" and they used to be a kind of a bluish colour.
