  1. To make rush lights get rushes and peel them and put the pith to dry. When they are dry dip them in grease which is kept in a little vessel called a "grisset".
    The old people used to make a dye from heather.
    They would cut the tops from the heather and boil them and then dip the articles in this liquid.
    Soot and saffron were also used for dyeing.
    Soap was made from elder - pith and these balls of soap were called "ash-balls".
    Blacksmiths used to make a spade called a "jack".
    The people used to tan leather themselves. They would put lime and salt on the leather and bury it in the
