Lyons, situated about 3 miles from Celbridge is one of the historic places of Co. Kildare.
At one time it was a village, but it was burnt in the war of 1641. With the exception of an old Castle, and the ruins of a Catholic Church, no trace remains.
It is interesting to note that a Catholic graveyard surrounds the ruins of the Church.
Its walls now protect a vault, in which the coffins are still to be seen intact. In this graveyard there are still to be seen tombstones dating back to 1693. In the old castle there is a winding staircase, which is still perfect. It is very probable that this was used as a defence
